\u201cSelling this tea in Europe... that would be something!\u201d While the thick wind blew around my ears in the middle of Hanoi's city traffic, I briefly had this one thought, but then forgot it again pretty quickly. There were four of us sitting on one motorbike \u2013 at the front between the taxi driver's legs was my five-year-old son, while my seven-year-old was clinging to my back. And our bellies were full of tea. We were on our way back from this small, unassuming teahouse to our hotel. The next day we were heading back to Austria\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was in September 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had been drinking and loving tea for my whole life. One of my fondest childhood memories is the scent of smoky Lapsang Souchong, which my father liked to prepare in a red clay pot. Later on, I regularly raided the tea cupboard at home and discovered various black teas in particular. Ceylon Orange Pekoe was my absolute favourite tea for many years \u2013 back then often (tea purists please look away\u2026!) mixed with freshly squeezed orange juice. As a teenager, when I discovered Qigong and Eastern philosophy, I inevitably came across green tea as well. At first, the taste seemed strange to me, probably also because I had hardly any access to high-quality tea. But over the years, I fell more and more in love. Alongside many varieties of green tea, I also discovered white and oolong tea, and this beverage became not only my constant companion, but also my teacher, my muse, my gateway to my deepest inner self. There are probably not many people who will understand when I say that often the smell of tea alone is enough to bring tears to my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For at least ten years before that fateful afternoon in Hanoi, I had been dreaming of a trip to Vietnam. Not because of tea, I wasn't thinking about that at all. Something drew me there, even though I knew hardly anything about the country. Yet something always kept getting in the way, first university, then work, then the children. In the meantime, I travelled to China and Japan, drank plenty of tea there too, and was enchanted by those thousands-of-years-old cultures. But at some point I knew that now it had to be Vietnam, I couldn't wait any longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou're crazy...\u201d was my father's comment, and yes, perhaps we were. After all, we were in the middle of building a house, and you just don't spend that much money on a trip...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still remember very clearly the moment when we landed in Ho Chi Minh City and left the air-conditioned airport terminal. It was evening and I was hit by the thick, hot and humid air of Vietnam. And in that very moment\u2026 I was at home. It was as if I had been there a thousand times before, as if I were simply coming back. And that feeling has stayed with me to this day. We travelled through the entire country from south to north for a month. My husband had to go home after just two weeks, so I was travelling alone with my sons for almost three weeks. No problem in Vietnam \u2013 children are welcome there and are treated with incredible affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final part of our journey took us to the far north, to H\u00e0 Giang. Since I was travelling with two small children, I decided not to do the famous H\u00e0 Giang Loop by motorbike, but by car. We booked a driver for just under a week to take us through this breathtakingly beautiful landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn't quite hide my love of tea after all, and since I knew there was tea somewhere up north too, I asked the driver to visit a tea plantation. For several days I was put off again and again and in the end I already thought nothing would likely come out of it. Until one fine morning he suddenly just stopped at the side of the road and said to me: \u201cHere is where the tea grows!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there was no plantation, the way I had imagined it, with small, neatly trimmed bushes in neat rows. No, bushes and trees were growing there. Partly a little tamed in approximate rows, but for the most part completely mixed up, some several metres high. I was rather surprised, because what I simply hadn't known back then: I had ended up right in the tea plant's region of origin. Right where tea has been growing wild for thousands of years, and from where all tea plants that grow on plantations on this earth eventually came, in one form or another. Today, this region stretches from southern China through Laos and northern Vietnam to Myanmar, Thailand and parts of northern India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in Hanoi, before our departure, I wanted to visit a teahouse as a nice finish. The first one that Google spat out wasn't too far away, so off we went. And what was there? Exclusively tea from wild tea trees! After a long tasting session, I bought a small stash and before I knew it, we were back on the motorbike heading for the hotel. And back in Austria, after a while, I noticed that I hardly wanted to drink any other tea any more. And then it was there again, that thought: \u201cI could sell this tea here...!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, good things take time. It took five years for the call to become so strong that I could no longer ignore it, and a year later, in the summer of 2025, after an infinite number of doubts, gruelling preparation and an unbelievable number of hours of work teadaydreams<\/em> was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet Vietnam gave me something else, perhaps much more important: the feeling of being at home. And even if I cannot always be there, many new friendships have been formed and, last but not least, I now also have a Vietnamese sister-in-law, whose culinary skills are always able to ease my longing a little. And by now my dad even laughs when I say to him: \u201cYou see, we simply had to go to Vietnam back then, even if it was crazy!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major tea-countries China, Japan and India produce tons of (also really good) tea.
